5 Monitoring a Virtual TapeServer (VTS) in HP SIM
You can monitor a VTS with HP SIM.
NOTE:
• You must have a VTS version 8.0 or later.
• You can only monitor the disks on a DL185G5 based VTS.
To monitor a VTS with HP SIM, follow these steps:
1. Using the DVD that is provided with your VTS, install the agents on your VTS as follows:
a. Burn HPSIM.iso to a DVD or via HP Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) and create a virtual
image.
On the VTS, enter the following command:

[root@gmcsc-vts ~]# mkdir /media/cdrom
[root@gmcsc-vts ~]# mount /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom
mount: block device /dev/cdrom is write-protected, mounting read-only
[root@gmcsc-vts ~]# /media/cdrom/installHPTools.bash
Stopping HP services
Uninstalling previously installed HP SIM RPMs...
Installing/upgrading HP SIM support RPMs...
SIM support RPMs were successfully installed.
Installing/upgrading HP SIM...
HP SIM was successfully installed.
Reboot system to complete installation.
[root@gmcsc-vts ~]# umount /media/cdrom
[root@gmcsc-vts ~]# eject
[root@gmcsc-vts ~]# reboot
b. Review the SIM-install-YYYYMMDD.log file for any errors or messages located in
the /usr/local/tape/log/ log file.
c. Ensure that all services are started:
$ su -
d. Enter the root password.
e. Enter the following service commands:
$ service hp-snmp-agents status
$ service hpsmhd status
$ service snmpd status
$ service snmptrapd status
NOTE: If any of these services are not running, replace status with start.
2. Discover your VTS in HP SIM as a ProLiant providing valid credentials for the VTS using the
discovery steps described in “Discovering a NonStop System” (page 16).
3. To determine what model of Proliant server VTS you are running, as root, enter:
# dmidecode -t 1
# dmidecode 2.7
SMBIOS 2.5 present.
Handle 0x0001, DMI type 1, 27 bytes.
