Application Availability
Application Availability
Certain features of Tandem’s SNA products can be used to improve availability of your
applications and speed configuration time:
•
On Himalaya K-series servers, Dynamic System Configuration (DSC) allows you to
add or modify controllers and lines without stopping the Tandem system. On
Himalaya S-series servers, SCF provides online reconfiguration of the
ServerNetWAN concentrator and lines.
•
SNAX/XF and SNAX/APN support for multiple service managers allows you to
partition a network of SNA devices across several service managers. This ensures
availability of most of your network—even if one service manager process should
fail. This feature also supports faster configuration by issuing commands to several
service managers in parallel.
•
SNAX/XF provides faster configuration of large networks by using SCF ADD LU
commands with the NUMBEROFLUs attribute.
SNA Network Definition
When a Tandem NonStop system is connected to an SNA network, its SNA resources
must also be defined to the SNA network. For example, a Tandem NonStop system that
is connected to an SNA host through an SNA communication controller must be defined
to VTAM and NCP. Resource names must be consistent between the Tandem system
definition and the SNA network definition.
To use the SNAX/APN extended logon facility, the Tandem Logon Manager for IBM
Systems (ILOGMGR) must be installed and configured on an SNA host (see
Figure 5-3
).
Ongoing Management
After the products are started and configured, a system manager (or management
program) must perform ongoing activities, such as:
•
Starting and stopping resources
•
Monitoring the status of resources
•
Monitoring statistics
•
Monitoring events and (as needed) taking corrective action
•
Taking traces to diagnose problems
•
Modifying the configuration
These activities are performed using the tools described under “Tools for Configuration
and Management.”
