Introduction to Tandem X.25 Capabilities

E-Mail Messaging Using X.400 over X25AM

Figure 3-1 illustrates how a large European retail organization is using Tandem
systems and the services provided by this value-added network. The retailer first
established a chain of grocery stores, and then expanded into banking, travel,
insurance, oil, music stores, bookstores, restaurants, and hotels. The retail business
currently includes 527 stores, 101 stores-on-wheels, and 191 restaurants. The
organization’s bank issues a private-label card, which can be used at all of the
organization’s stores, restaurants, and hotels.
A Tandem communications network handles store-and-forward messaging and data
transmission between the retail outlets and headquarters. Merchandise orders are
transmitted over the network, along with some sales data.
Networking
Communications between
Guardian NonStop Systems
and the Integrity S2
A NonStop TXP system (with 4 CPUs) runs the store-and-forward messaging
application, while a NonStop CLX (with 4 CPUs) runs the telex, fax, and electronic
mail applications. An application on an Integrity S2 system is used for deadline
control and order handling. Integrity S2 is a Tandem UNIX system, and it runs a
different X.25 communications process, not X25AM. However, since X.25 is a
common standard, the Integrity S2 can be integrated into the same X.25 network as
other Tandem systems, which are running the Guardian 90 operating system.
The deadline-control and order-handling application controls delivery times and
dates, and automatically sends suppliers a reminder notice; it also controls the
issuance of invoices, delivery notices, and dispatches to the various supermarkets in
the organization.
