Pharmacy Network
Using X25AM ITI
Protocol
A large health care provider has installed a private packet-switching network to
connect its pharmacies (Figure 3-5). The network will eventually support over 100
pharmacies, both inpatient and outpatient. Each pharmacy has a terminal (a CRT and
a cash drawer) connected to Tandem NonStop System via a PAD and a PSDN. The
terminals emulate the 6510 protocol, because the pharmacy management application
that handles the screen transfer was originally written for a 6510 terminal.
All devices are connected by PVCs. The use of PVCs rather than SVCs is not too
expensive, because the network is using its own lines, which are supported by
microwave. The devices are dedicated to the pharmacy management application, and
are not used for other applications.
