The TRANSFER Environment
Overview
A TRANSFER system can be described as a community of users—or correspondents—
and as a means for them to exchange information. To let correspondents communicate,
TRANSFER provides these basic functions:
■ TRANSFER keeps a name directory, providing a means for correspondents to
identify themselves and other correspondents.
■ TRANSFER maintains a holding area for packages and parts of packages, giving
correspondents a place and a way to assemble and receive packages.
■ TRANSFER includes a set of processes that deliver packages to the right
correspondents at the right times.
TRANSFER also allows you to specify the national language and to set character maps
for your system. User interfaces and a number of generated TRANSFER words and
messages can be presented to correspondents in French, German, Italian, or one of
several other languages that Tandem supports.
This section describes the objects managed by TRANSFER and introduces the processes
involved in package delivery.
