Distribution Lists
A distribution list is a predefined list of recipient names. A recipient name can be the
name of a correspondent, of a group, or of another distribution list. Distribution lists
provide a simple method for a correspondent to send a package to multiple recipients.
A correspondent can use the ADMIN application supplied by Tandem or a user-written
application to create new distribution lists and to add members to and delete members
from existing distribution lists. The correspondent who creates a distribution list owns
the list. Any correspondent can use a distribution list owned by another correspondent.
A period separates a distribution list name from the owner’s correspondent name. An
example of a distribution list name is:
The distribution list LOMAN-W .SALESLIST @ BOSTON might contain these
member correspondent names and distribution list names:
A correspondent can send messages to all the members of an interest group by using the
group’s distribution list. A distribution list, MEMBERS, containing the names of all the
group members, is automatically created for each interest group. Correspondents can
also add their names to voluntary distribution lists.
TRANSFER automatically creates and maintains a special interest group called
PUBLIC at each node. All correspondents on the local node are, by default, members of
the PUBLIC group and receive all messages sent to the distribution list for the PUBLIC
group.
AUSTEN_J.SOCIAL @ BATH AUSTEN_J at the \BATH node owns this
distribution list named SOCIAL.
MILLER-MARILYN @ HOLLY A correspondent who is at the \HOLLY node.
LOMAN-BIFF @ BRKLYN A correspondent who is at the \BRKLYN node.
COBB-LEE.PRODLIST @ BRDWY A distribution list named PRODLIST that is
owned by COBB-LEE at the \BRDWY node;
LOMAN-W does not need to know the
members of this distribution list.
