Introduction to TRANSFER Delivery System

Sessions The TRANSFER Environment

Sessions
Before a requester can access a depot to build, send, or receive packages or to do other
work for a correspondent, the requester must establish a session between the
correspondent and TRANSFER. A session starts when a correspondent logs on and
begins communicating with TRANSFER and terminates when the correspondent logs
off and ends that communication. A correspondent can have multiple sessions running
at one time.
The requester process sends a request to TISERV, supplying the name and the password
of the registered correspondent. TISERV then checks the name directory at the
correspondent’s node to verify the correspondent name and password and sets up a
session for the correspondent. A WASTEBASKET folder is automatically created for
each session; when the session is terminated, the WASTEBASKET folder for that
session is deleted.
A session is established between a requester and TRANSFER on behalf of a
correspondent; it is not established between correspondents. A session does not include
the routing and delivery of packages to depots.
Neither the sender nor any recipient of a package is required to have a session in
progress while the package is in transit or when it arrives at a depot. When the
TRANSFER asynchronous processes are delivering a message, they start a session for
any agents. When the agents complete their actions, the session is ended.
Figure 2-8 illustrates what is included in a session.
