Glossary-2 109426—Introduction to TRANSFER Delivery System
Depot. That part of the TRANSFER database associated with a particular correspondent or
interest group. A private depot is privately owned by an individual correspondent, and a
group depot is shared among all the correspondents belonging to the interest group
associated with that depot. A depot includes the profiles, folders, and distribution lists
that belong to the correspondent or interest group. Each correspondent and interest
group has one depot, which is created when the correspondent or interest group is
registered with TRANSFER.
Depot owner. The correspondent or interest group for whom the depot was created.
Distribution list. A predefined list of recipient names that provides a simple method for a
correspondent to send a package to multiple destinations. A member of a distribution
list can be a correspondent, an interest group, or another distribution list. The
distribution list belongs to the depot owner but can be used by any correspondent.
Contrast with Recipient list.
ENSCRIBE. A database record management system.
EXPAND. The Tandem NonStop network that extends the concept of fault-tolerant operation
to networks of geographically distributed NonStop systems. If the network is properly
designed, communication paths are constantly available, even in the event of a single
line or component failure.
External object. A GUARDIAN 90 file that is kept as a GUARDIAN 90 file, external to the
TRANSFER database, which can be attached to a TRANSFER item and transported.
Folder. An area in which items and packages can be stored. A folder belongs to the depot
owner, and only the depot owner can inspect the contents of the folder. In addition to
the folders automatically created and maintained by TRANSFER, a correspondent can
define folders for a depot. Interest groups can have shared folders; for example, the
Bulletin board.
Gateway. Software that allows users to integrate Tandem equipment with other hosts,
including IBM, DEC, Hewlett-Packard, and Data General.
Group depot. The depot for an interest group. Each interest group has a group depot with
profiles, folders, and distribution lists, like those for a correspondent depot.
GUARDIAN 90 operating system. The Tandem operating system. GUARDIAN 90 allows
a user process in any given processor to access resources belonging to any other
processor in the same system.
INBOX folder. A special folder that is automatically created for each correspondent.
TRANSFER delivers a package to the INBOX folder of each recipient of the package.
Interest group. A group of correspondents who have a common interest or function, who
share access to group folders and can add their names to group distribution lists. Group
members can read items in a group bulletin board folder and save items to the bulletin
board for others to read. Each interest group has a group depot with profiles, folders,
and distribution lists, like those for a correspondent depot.
