Information Xchange Facility (IXF) File Transfer
Information Xchange Facility (IXF) File Transfer
IXF allows you to move data between a workstation and a NonStop™ Himalaya S-series
server by using three commands:
•
GET—Copies data from a file or a device on a NonStop™ Himalaya S-series host to
a file or a device on the workstation.
•
PUT—Copies data from a file or a device on the workstation to a file or a device on
a NonStop™ Himalaya S-series host.
•
PRINT—Prints a workstation file on a NonStop™ Himalaya S-series host printer.
For example, you can transfer both binary (byte-for-byte) or ASCII (text) files directly
between hard disks or floppy diskettes on the workstation and the host. You also can
transfer files from one computer to nondisk devices—such as printers, display screens,
and magnetic tape drives—attached to another computer.
When a file is transferred from a workstation to the operating system, the file name is
truncated if it is longer than eight characters. In addition, NetWare file attributes are not
preserved. When a file is transferred from the operating system to a workstation, IXF
sets the attributes of the file to predefined default values.
NetWare Print Services
This subsection discusses some of the details about the operation of the NonStop™
IPX/SPX provision of the Spooler subsystem.
A NetWare print queue is a directory on a NetWare file server. NetWare applications
typically write a print job directly to a NetWare print queue. When a print job is sent to
the print queue, a file is opened in the directory. When the print job is completed, the file
is deleted.
Print services on a NetWare network can be loaded on a file server or on a dedicated
server called a print server. The print server manages the print queue and provides
communications to the print queue, the printer, and you. The print server manages print
services for a configured set of printers. When a print job is in the print queue, the print
server moves it from the queue to the appropriate printer. The print server knows when a
printer is available and opens a path to allow the queue to send the next print job to the
printer.
A dedicated print server can service the print queues of as many as 8 file servers and can
support as many as 16 printers, 5 of which can be directly attached to the print server.
Note. Printing from Telserv to NetWare printers is not supported.
