Media Access Control (MAC) address
Media Access Control (MAC) address. A value in the Medium Access Control sublayer of
the IEEE/ISO/ANSI LAN architecture that uniquely identifies an individual station that
implements a single point of physical attachment to a local area network (LAN).
MFIOB. See multifunction I/O board (MFIOB)
.
multicast. A technique that allows copies of a single packet to be passed to a selected subset
of all possible destinations. Some hardware (for example, Ethernet and token-ring
adapters) supports multicast by allowing a network interface to belong to one or more
multicast groups. A special form of multicast is broadcast
, wherein the subset of
machines to receive a copy of a packet consists of the entire set.
multifunction I/O board (MFIOB). A ServerNet addressable controller (SAC)
that contains
ServerNet addressable controllers (SACs) for SCSI and Ethernet; a service processor;
ServerNet links to the processor, to the two ServerNet adapter slots, and to one of the
ServerNet expansion board (SEB) slots; and connections to the serial maintenance bus
(SMB), which connects components within an enclosure to the service processor.
NAMES. A nonsensitive command
that displays the names and types of all objects or a
subset of objects known to the NonStop™ IPX/SPX subsystem.
NCP. See NetWare Core Protocol (NCP)
.
NetBIOS. See Network Basic Input/Output System (NetBIOS)
.
NetWare Core Protocol (NCP). A Novell protocol for request-response access to NetWare
services, such as printing and filing.
NetWare Loadable Module (NLM). A software module that conforms to a standard that
allows the module to function with and communicate with other NLMs and with
NetWare software.
NetWare server. A system that runs NetWare network operating system (NOS)
software. The
server can be dedicated (used only as a server) or nondedicated (used as a server or
workstation).
network adapter card (NIC). A printed circuit card that provides the interface between a
workstation and the local area network (LAN)
.
Network Basic Input/Output System (NetBIOS). An interface between programs executing
in the workstation and an attached local area network (LAN)
.
network operating system (NOS). An operating system designed to provide such services as
device management, file management, communications, and network management for
workstations connected to local area networks (LANs). NOS examples include Novell
NetWare, Microsoft LAN Manager, IBM LAN Server, and Banyan System VINES.
NIC. See network adapter card (NIC)
.
NLM. See NetWare Loadable Module (NLM)
.
