NonStop™ Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) Server Services
Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) is an industry-standard interface for database
access. NonStop™ IPX/SPX allows workstation clients running Microsoft ODBC or
Sybase DBLIB applications to access data stored in NonStop™ Structured Query
Language (SQL) databases through the ODBC Server, as shown in Figure 2-8
.
ODBC allows software developers to write a single set of code that can access databases
from diverse SQL vendors on many different platforms. Any application that uses
ODBC uses a single set of calls, no matter which database is accessed. As long as the
application does not use any vendor-specific extensions, it does not need to know to
which database or which platform it will be connecting.
As a NetWare workstation user, you choose the NonStop™ database that you want to
connect to from a list of databases. The Microsoft ODBC Driver Manager in the
workstation loads the ODBC driver for the ODBC Server. When the workstation
application makes an ODBC call, the Microsoft ODBC Driver Manager passes the
information in the call to the database driver. The database driver then passes the request
to the ODBC Server through NonStop™ IPX/SPX. Access to the NonStop™ Himalaya
S-series server over NonStop™ IPX/SPX is transparent to the client workstation.
