manager process
manager process. In DSM, a HP subsystem process with which the SCP management
process communicates to control a particular data communications subsystem.
MILNET. (Military Network) Originally part of the ARPANET, MILNET was partitioned in
1984 to make it possible for military installations to have reliable network service
whereas the ARPANET continued to be used for research. MILNET uses exactly the
same hardware and protocol technology as ARPANET, and there are several
interconnection points between the two. Thus, under normal circumstances, MILNET
sites are part of the Internet.
MLAD. See Multilan Attachment Device (MLAD).
MLSR. See Multilan file server (MLSRV).
multicast. Multicast is a TCP/IP feature allows a single UDP packet to be delivered to
multiple recipients. A sender sends a multicast, UDP packet and routers forward that
packet to the router's subnet if there are any members of the multicast group in the
subnet. The router can also forward the message to other routers. Only those
applications that have joined the multicast group receive the packet.
Multilan. A hardware and software product that allows users to connect their local area
networks (LANs) to NonStop systems.
Multilan Attachment Device (MLAD). A unit that provides the interface for adapter cards
through the Multilan controller in order to communicate with workstations over the
network.
Multilan file server (MLSRV). A server program on a NonStop system that is used to
maintain DOS files on disk.
NCP. See NetWare Core Protocol (NCP).
NDS. See NetWare Directory Services (NDS).
NetBIOS. SeeNetwork Basic I/O System
.
NetWare Core Protocol (NCP). Novell’s protocol for request-response access to NetWare
services, such as printing and filing.
NetWare Directory Services (NDS). NetWare 4.0 database of network resources.
NetWare Loadable Module (NLM). A software module that conforms to a standard that
allows the module to function with and communicate with other NLMs and with
NetWare software.
NetWare server. A system that runs NetWare operating system software. The server can
be dedicated (used only as a server) or nondedicated (used as a server or a
workstation).
