object-name template
object-name template. In DSM, a name that stands for more than one object. Such a
name includes one or more wild-card characters, such as * and ?. See also wild-card
character.
Open Database Connectivity (ODBC). Microsoft’s API for connecting to a database. This
interface allows programmers to write a single set of code to access different SQL
databases.
open system. Any computer system that adheres to the OSI standards.
Open Systems Interconnection. See OSI.
OSI. (Open Systems Interconnection) A set of standards used for the interconnection of
heterogeneous computer systems, thus providing universal connectivity.
OSI Reference Model. A communications architecture, adopted by the ISO in 1984, that
includes seven layers that define the functions involved in communications between
two systems, the services required to perform these functions, and the protocols
associated with these services.
packet. The unit of data sent across a packet-switching network. Although some Internet
literature uses it to refer specifically to data sent across a physical network, other
literature views the Internet as a packet-switching network and describes IP datagrams
as packets.
packet-switching. A technique in which messages are broken into smaller units, called
packets, that can be individually addressed and routed through the network. The
receiving-end node ascertains that all the packets are received and in the proper
sequence before forwarding the complete message to the addressee.
Pathway. A HP application that configures and manages online transaction applications.
PathWay Open Environment Toolkit (POET). A set of programs and utilities that assists
in the creation and running of client/transaction server applications for NonStop
systems. POET can be used to build clients that run on a PC platform.
PCONSOLE. NetWare print console utility used to create, configure, and monitor print
queues, print servers, and shared network printers. It can be run by any network user;
however, specific tasks can only be performed by certain types of users.
PCT. A HP program that runs on an IBM-type PC with the MS-DOS operating system, and
emulates a 6530 terminal.
PDN. (public data network) A network with data communications services available to any
subscriber.
