Sequenced Packet Exchange (SPX and SPXII)
Sequenced Packet Exchange (SPX and SPXII). A Novell protocol that allows two
workstations or applications to communicate across the network. SPX and SPXII use
Novell NetWare IPX to deliver the messages, but SPX and SPXII guarantee delivery of
the messages and maintain the order of messages on the packet stream. In addition to
the features of SPX, SPXII negotiates the use of larger packet sizes and employs a
true windowing protocol.
server. A program that receives messages from requesters, performs specified operations,
and returns reply messages to the requester. See client.
Server Message Block (SMB). A file server protocol built into DOS.
ServerNet addressable controller (SAC). A ServerNet addressable controller (SAC)
corresponds to controller functionality uniquely addressable within one or more
ServerNet address domains through the node ID and address fields in a request
packet. A SAC is typically implemented on some portion of a processor multifunction
CRU, an I/O multifunction CRU, or a ServerNet adapter. Examples: Each controller on
a multifunction I/O board (MFIOB) and Ethernet 4 ServerNet adapter (E4SA), and each
controller on a device connect ServerNet adapter (DCSA).
ServerNet LAN systems access (SLSA) subsystem. The software that allows the
protocol I/O processes (IOPs) and drivers to access the ServerNet adapters.
service. A set of primitives (operations) that a layer provides to the layer above it. The
service defines what operations the layer can perform on behalf of its users, but not
how these operations are implemented. A service relates to an interface between two
layers, with the lower layer being the service provider and the upper layer being the
service user. Compare protocol.
Service Advertising Protocol (SAP). A Novell protocol that provides a way for service
nodes, such as file and print servers, to register their services and addresses in Server
Information Tables. Clients can then query these tables for available services and their
IPX addresses.
session. For a management application, the period during which an application can issue
commands to a subsystem.
SLSA subsystem. See ServerNet LAN systems access (SLSA) subsystem.
SMB. See Server Message Block (SMB).
SMTP. (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) The Internet standard protocol for transferring
electronic mail messages from one machine to another. SMTP specifies how two mail
systems interact and specifies the format of control messages they exchange to
transfer mail.
