Using the NBTEST / RML Utility program
Some common responses after response NB13 are:
Running PC NBTEST in LISTEN Mode and Compaq NBTEST in CALL Mode
Some NBT applications, such as LANSPOOL, FASTPSMB, and user WSPTP
programs, have the Compaq host running in CALL mode and the remote PC in LISTEN
mode. To test this direction of connectivity, first run PC NBTEST in LISTEN mode:
1. Bring up the NetBIOS protocol stack driver according to the vendor’s instructions.
2. Run the NBTEST program from an MS-DOS command prompt, as follows:
NBTEST LISTEN
Then run Compaq NBTEST in CALL mode:
1. Bring up NBT with a running domain. Refer to Running NBT
on page 3-2 and ADD
DOMAIN on page 3-8 for details.
2. Run the NBTEST program from a TACL prompt, as follows:
RUN NBTEST DOMAIN=$NBT.#DOM1 CALL
where $NBT refers to the NBT process name and #DOM1 refers to the domain
added to the NBT process.
The same messages apply as described in Running Compaq NBTEST in LISTEN Mode
and PC NBTEST in CALL Mode on page 4-4, but the Compaq and PC messages are
switched.
If the PC NBTEST is in state NB20 listening for a remote call, then the only safe way to
abort the PC NBTEST program is to reboot the PC. Other means, such as Control-
Break, may appear to work but, depending upon the particular NetBIOS protocol stack
and other local PC environment conditions, the PC may freeze or otherwise malfunction
at a later time. To be safe, either wait for NBTEST LISTEN to complete on its own, or
reboot the PC.
Using the Results of NBTEST
If NBTEST does not operate successfully, then rerun NBTEST with NBT tracing active.
Both the problem description and the trace files will be simpler using NBTEST rather
than more complex applications such as OV, SMB (on G-series systems), or MLSRV
(on D-series systems). All NBTEST messages are preceeded with a message code of the
form NBnn. Record all messages, including the message codes, when placing a support
call.
NB14 CALL cannot complete. This indicates either that Compaq NBTEST is not
running in LISTEN mode, or that there is no connectivity between the PC and
the Compaq host.
NB15 Call completed. NBTEST will now exchange 3 messages
NB25 Message statistics are displayed after the first and last messages exchanged,
and periodically during long test sessions
NB24 Specified message count reached, normal termination
