Glossary
This glossary defines terms used both in this manual and in other Compaq manuals that
describe NonStop IPX/SPX. Because this glossary is for Compaq NonStop IPX/SPX as
a whole, not all of the terms listed here appear in this manual.
ABORT. A sensitive command
that terminates the operation of a NonStop IPX/SPX object
abruptly without regard for interruption of data transfer.
ABORTING. The state of an object, indicating that it is responding to an ABORT
command
or some type of malfunction.
Access Control Server (ACS). An optional Compaq system process that can be used to
grant or deny workstation access to the Remote Server Call (RSC)
services on the
Compaq system. Users must create their own RSC ACS.
access list. The file maintained by the LAN Manager (LANMAN) process
that defines which
ServerNet addressable controllers (SACs) a LAN Monitor (LANMON) process owns.
action event. An event that requires operator intervention to resolve. Each subsystem
determines which events are action events by including a unique Event Management
Service (EMS) token in the event message. Action events are reported as pairs of event
messages: an action-attention message that reports the problem and an action-
completion message that reports the resolution.
adapter card. See network adapter card (NIC)
.
ADD. A sensitive command
that adds a process with its associated attributes to the NonStop
IPX/SPX subsystem.
address mask. A bit mask used to select bits from an Internet address for subnet addressing.
The mask is 32 bits long and selects the network portion of the Internet address and 1 or
more bits from the local portion.
address resolution. Conversion of an Internet address into a corresponding physical address.
Depending on the underlying network, address resolution may require broadcasting on a
local network. See also Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)
.
Address Resolution Protocol (ARP). The Internet protocol used to dynamically bind a high-
level Internet address to a low-level physical hardware address. ARP applies only across
a single physical network and is limited to networks that support hardware broadcast
.
ALTER. A sensitive command
that changes the values of one or more attributes of an object.
API. See application program interface (API)
.
