protocol
protocol. A formal description of message formats and the rules two or more machines must
follow to exchange those messages. Protocols can describe low-level details of machine-
to-machine interfaces (for example, the order in which the bits from a byte are sent
across a wire) or high-level exchanges between application programs (for example, the
way in which two programs transfer a file across the Internet). Most protocols include
both intuitive descriptions of the expected interactions and more formal specifications
using finite state-machine models.
PSERVER. A NetWare printer utility used to load a print server
on the file server after
services have been defined with PCONSOLE.
PTrace. A Compaq program used to display trace files created through the use of the
Subsystem Control Facility (SCF)
TRACE command.
QIO. See Queued Input/Output (QIO)
.
Queued Input/Output (QIO). A Compaq product that provides buffers and control blocks
for protocol processes, including the ServerNet LAN systems access (SLSA) subsystem
and the NonStop IPX/SPX subsystem running on the same processor.
Remote Server Call (RSC). A Compaq extension to NonStop Transaction Services/MP
(NonStop TS/MP) that allows workstation clients to access Pathway servers and other
Guardian processes on a Himalaya S-series server. RSC lets you implement powerful
client-server applications—the workstation is the client; the Himalaya S-series server
with its NonStop TS/MP and Pathway/TS
online transaction processing (OLTP)
software is the server—by taking advantage of the power of the workstation with its
extensive capabilities and easy-to-use graphical user interfaces (GUIs).
response. In Distributed Systems Management (DSM)
, the information or confirmation
supplied (as part of a response message) to an application by a subsystem in response to
a DSM command.
RIP. See Routing Information Protocol (RIP)
.
Routing Information Protocol (RIP). A protocol
used to control packet forwarding between
routers in a network.
RSC. See Remote Server Call (RSC)
.
RSCCOM. A command language interface (CLI) that configures and controls the
Transaction Delivery Process (TDP)
and its objects. Used for Remote Server Call
(RSC).
SAC. See ServerNet addressable controller (SAC)
.
SAP. See Service Advertising Protocol (SAP)

SCF. See Subsystem Control Facility (SCF)
