sensitive command
sensitive command. A Subsystem Control Facility (SCF) command that can be issued only
by a restricted set of users, such as the owner of a subsystem process. For Compaq data
communications subsystems, the sensitive commands are those that can change the state
or configuration of objects, start or stop tracing, or change the values of statistics
counters. Contrast nonsensitive command
.
Sequenced Packet Exchange (SPX). A Novell protocol that allows two workstations or
applications to communicate across a local area network (LAN)
. SPX uses the Novell
Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX)
protocol to deliver messages, but SPX guarantees
their delivery and maintains their order on the packet stream.
server. A program that receives messages from a requester, performs specified operations,
and returns reply messages to the requester. See also client
.
Server Message Block (SMB). A file-server protocol
built into MS-DOS.
ServerNet addressable controller (SAC). A SAC corresponds to controller function
uniquely addressable within one or more ServerNet address domains through the node
ID and address fields in a request packet. Typically, a SAC is implemented on some
portion of a processor multifunction customer-replaceable unit (PMF CRU), an I/O
multifunction CRU, or a ServerNet addressable controller (SAC)
.
ServerNet LAN systems access (SLSA) subsystem. The Compaq data communications
subsystem that allows the protocol I/O processes (IOPs) and drivers to access a
ServerNet addressable controller (SAC)
on a local area network (LAN).
service. A set of primitives (operations) that a layer provides to the layer above it. The
service defines what operations the layer can perform on behalf of its users but not how
these operations are implemented. A service relates to an interface between two layers:
the lower layer is the service provider, and the upper layer is the service user. Compare
protocol
.
Service Advertising Protocol (SAP). A Novell protocol that enables service nodes, such as
file and print servers, to register their services and addresses in Server Information
Tables. Clients can then query these tables for available services and their Internetwork
Packet Exchange (IPX) addresses.
session. For a management application, the period during which an application can issue
commands to a subsystem.
SLSA subsystem. See ServerNet LAN systems access (SLSA) subsystem
.
SMB. See Server Message Block (SMB)
.
SNAP. See Subnetwork Access Protocol (SNAP)
.
socket. For Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) software, an endpoint for communications
created by the socket or socket_nw2 function calls.
