Managing the UMS
Database
User ID definition records reside in the UMS database. A NonStop NET/MASTER MS
system creates the database during its first startup phase. During system initialization,
NonStop NET/MASTER MS searches for the database; specifically, it searches the
ZNNMDATA subvolume for a file named pUMSFILE, where p is the first character of
the NCP name. If NonStop NET/MASTER MS cannot find the file, it creates a file
named pUMSFILE, based on the model file named UMSFILE. You can specify the
name of the file by changing the value of the PARAM UMSFILE command in the
CONFIG file. Several NonStop NET/MASTER MS systems on the same node can
share a common UMS database by using the PARAM UMSFILE command. See
Section 3, “Configuring NonStop NET/MASTER MS.”
The UMS database contains all information about users and the passwords for
NonStop NET/MASTER MS. Apart from the user ID, all data in the file is encrypted.
If the file is deleted or corrupted in some way, access to NonStop NET/MASTER MS
can be denied. The initial user ID and password are no longer available after they
have been used. Loss of the UMS database means that you must copy or restore from
backup the UMSFILE and reenter the user ID definition records. You can protect
against loss of the file by storing it on a mirrored disk; this provides an immediate and
current backup should a failure occur on the primary disk. You should also make a
backup copy of the file regularly.
