Defining External
Utilities
An external utility is considered defined when one of the utility definition databases
contains a record for it. NonStop NET/MASTER MS uses information in the utility
definition record to start a session with the utility. The record also contains
information that enables NonStop NET/MASTER MS to use the utility’s command
interpreter. A complete list of the record fields appears in “Contents of a Utility
Definition Record,” later in this section.
There are two utility definition databases:
The distributed utility definition database contains utility definition records
supplied by Tandem, describing many Tandem utilities and subsystem interface
programs. Tandem distributes this database for your convenience, and you can
change records in this database to suit your site’s needs. This database is specified
by the UADUTIL operand of the PARAM command. (See Section 3, “Configuring
NonStop NET/MASTER MS,” for additional information about this operand.) For
a complete catalog of the utilities defined in the distributed utility definition
database, refer to the NonStop NET/MASTER MS Command Reference Manual.
The customized utility definition database contains utility definition records that
are created as a result of operations that you perform. This database is specified
by the UACUTIL operand of the PARAM command. (See Section 3, “Configuring
NonStop NET/MASTER MS,” for additional information about this operand.)
Whenever you add, modify, or delete a utility definition record, the information is
written to the customized utility definition database. You add records when you
want to define external utilities for which no record exists in the distributed utility
definition database. Whenever you update a record in the distributed utility
definition database, NonStop NET/MASTER MS adds a copy of the record from
the distributed utility definition database to the customized utility definition
database and includes your modifications to the record in the copy.
The distributed utility definition database can be overwritten by new releases and
software updates; the customized utility definition database is not overwritten.
To add and maintain utility definition records, use the utility definition maintenance
panels. The panels are accessed by moving to the UMS : Utility Definition
Maintenance panel. Figure 6-2 illustrates the panels and their relationships to one
another.
The alphabetic characters near the arrows indicate the command or option mnemonic
used to access the panel.
