Testing Rulesets Using
Simulated Events
The RMS panel interface allows you to test your rulesets against simulated events. If
you are testing the ruleset when the ruleset is used with a message handler, you can
temporarily change the control options of the ruleset when the message handler starts.
If you use the narrative feature of the ruleset, the message handler sends you messages
about the ruleset activities. Use the displayed messages to determine if the ruleset
under test is working correctly. Furthermore, you can disable selected message
presentation and rule action features so that only narration occurs, but not the actions.
You can print the results of the test. Test your ruleset using the following simulated
events:
Simulate a single message to test a specific rule in a ruleset. When you start the
simulation, RMS starts a message handler using the ruleset under test.
Simulate a message flow to test multiple rules in a ruleset. You can use the
message flow in your OCS environment to test a ruleset, capture the processed
messages, and save them in a message set. When you start the test, RMS starts a
message handler using the ruleset under test.
You can edit a message set by adding new messages, deleting unwanted messages,
or modifying the existing messages. You can use the edited message set to
simulate a message flow to test rulesets. Using a message set, you ensure a
consistent message flow over your test cycle. Your ruleset may change, but the
message flow that triggers your rules does not.
Simulate a time event to test which time-based rules in a ruleset satisfy the time
criteria. The result of the simulation is a list of the rules that satisfy the criteria.
Controlling Message
Handlers and RMS Timers
The RMS panel interface allows you to start and purge message handlers, and to
activate and purge RMS timers. After you start a message handler or activate a timer,
you can list and dynamically modify the associated rulesets and rules. Because you
can make dynamic modifications, you do not have to restart a message handler to pick
up any modifications to the ruleset.
Note In general, most message handlers are started during the initialization of NonStop NET/MASTER MS or
during logon and do not require much operator intervention.
Message Handler Control
Using the RMS panel interface, you can control the operation of and display
information on the message handlers as follows:
Start a message handler in the various environments and specify the ruleset that
the handler uses.
List the message handlers that are executing on your system, together with the
user ID of the user that owns the environment in which a handler is executing and
the names of the rulesets that the handler is using.
