Implementing a
Ruleset for a Message
Handler
Armed with the basic operational characteristics of RMS and having stepped through
the sample session (described earlier in this section), use the guidelines presented here
to implement your rulesets for use by message handlers. The stages in implementing a
ruleset for a message handler are as follows (shown graphically in Figure 4-2):
1. Determine the message flow in the environment in which you intend to use the
message handler. You can start a message handler together with the STATSCAP
ruleset to give you statistics on the message flow. See Section 9, “Controlling
Message Handlers and Timers,” on how to start a message handler and Section 10,
“Capturing Statistics,” on how to capture and interpret the statistics on the
message flow.
2. Develop the ruleset and rules to define how you want to handle the message flow.
See Section 5, “Creating and Developing Rulesets and Rules,” and Section 6,
“Updating and Maintaining Rulesets, Rules, and Command Groups.”
3. Test the rules in the ruleset by using simulated events. See Section 8, “Testing
Rules Using Simulated Events.”
4. Start the message handler in the actual environment. See Section 9, “Controlling
Message Handlers and Timers.”
5. Use the statistics captured for the message handler to analyze if the ruleset
satisfies your requirements. See Section 10, “Capturing Statistics.” You may want
to review your requirements and modify your ruleset to improve the message
handling capability.
