Cause. The RIC word from an I/O operation on a 3202 controller has the CRC/multi-
track error flag set. A read, write, or write-file-mark operation that receives this error is
retried up to 40 times. The controller sets this flag when any of the following occur:
For nonreturn to zero inverted (NRZI) tape
The CRC character read from a tape does not match the CRC character
generated from the data read.
A bad spot on the tape is sufficient to cause a signal dropout, which is detected
during a write operation.
For PE tape
The CRC character generated internally by the controller from the data being
written does not match the CRC character generated from the readback data.
Errors were detected in two or more tracks during a read operation.
An end-of-record was detected before an end-of-data during a read or write
operation.
The preamble is shorter than 32 bytes or longer than 48 bytes.
During a write operation, data was detected earlier than expected by the read
head.
