A Top-Down Approach to Monitoring and Resolving
Problems
On the other hand, as shown in Figure 3-2, Yellow System Status Icon in OSM Service
Connection, a yellow System Status Icon indicates that problems do exist on the
system. Using this top-down approach, you now expand the tree pane, following the
yellow arrows to find the object reporting the alarm or negative attribute value.
OSM offers two other features, not available in TSM, to assist you in this top-down
system monitoring approach:
•
To stop known problems from propagating up and causing higher level objects to
indicate problem conditions within, you can choose to suppress a particular
problem attribute or alarm. This allows you to keep the System Status Icon green
until such time as another unknown problem occurs, thus making it easier to spot
these new problem conditions if and when they occur.
•
When you are monitoring multiple systems, you can easily create a System Status
Icon for each system in a small separate window from the main OSM management
window. This allows you to keep a high-level view for each system while
minimizing the main OSM windows, this saving screen space and clutter.
For more information on these and other OSM features, see the OSM Migration Guide
or the OSM User’s Guide (also available as online help within the OSM Service
Connection).
