NonStop System Console Installer Guide

18 Backing Up and Restoring a NonStop System Console
(NSC)
The procedures described in this chapter apply only to NonStop system consoles running Windows
Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008. Because these OS releases do not support an Automated
System Recovery (ASR) disk or Emergency Repair Disk (ERD), taking the proactive step of creating
a backup of the system configuration and data using the Microsoft Backup utility is recommended.
Should the console’s configuration settings or data be lost due to hard disk malfunction, accidental
deletion, etc., those settings and data can be restored from the archived backup file to the same
or another system console.
As part of a sound backup strategy, consider creating a backup archive not only after initial
system/LAN configuration, but also after subsequent configuration changes are made. Backing
up the console should also be part of your regular backup strategy. Both Windows Server 2003
and Windows Server 2008 have a scheduler which can be set to perform backups at user-selected
times.
TIP: Use the backup and restore procedure for your console's operating system (OS) type. Either:

Step 1 Save Network Configuration Information
If the console is being used to provide DNS, DHCP, and TFTP services for the dedicated service
LAN or you are using HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM), HP Insight Remote Support Advanced,
and/or NonStop Essentials software on the console; it is particularly important to save your network
configuration information.
NOTE:
Files to Back Up for HP SIM and Insight Remote Support Advanced
For information on what files to back up in the HP SIM database, see Backing up and restoring
HP SIM data files in a Windows environment located at:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00740865/c00740865.pdf
Backup/restore of the HP SIM database covers everything in the database, including Insight Remote
Support Advanced files.
TIP: The HP Insight Remote Support Advanced A.05.70 Maintenance Guide has a specific
chapter on backup/restore and provides a comprehensive list of links to manuals and white paper
all in one place:

Files to Back Up for NonStop Cluster Essentials
For information on what files to back up for NonStop Cluster Essentials, see the procedure for
“Exporting Cluster Configuration in the NonStop Cluster Essentials Installation and Quick Start
Guide.
