NonStop System Glossary

failover lookup table
A lookup table maintained in each of the CIPMONs that contains information for each CLIM,
including:
a list of interfaces operating on that CLIM
a failover flag
its failover interface
IP addresses and routes on each interface
The lookup table entries are validated or invalidated at run-time.
fan
A component that circulates air into the enclosure to help maintain optimal temperature.
fan assembly
The field-replaceable unit (FRU) that provides cooling to components in blade elements and in a
NonStop Blade Element.
far gateway
A short code sequence that accomplishes the transition to privileged mode for legitimate calls to
callable procedures that are located in a different direct jump area. Typically, SCr (system code,
RISC) is the target area. See also direct jump area, far jump, and gateway.
far jump
A sequence of RISC instructions that permits crossing the boundaries of the 256-megabyte direct
jump areas in virtual memory. Such sequences are necessary, for example, when calling into system
code from user code, because the two are located in different direct jump areas. The sequence
ends with a JR (Jump via Register) RISC instruction.
fastLoad
An optimization that allows the loader to avoid reading symbols and binding symbolic references
when loading a program or dynamic-link library in an environment equivalent to that of a previous
load. See also preset, cached bindings, and library import characterization (LIC).
Fast Ethernet ServerNet adapter (FESA)
A single-ported ServerNet adapter that supports 100-megabit/second (Mbps) or 10-Mbps Ethernet
data transfer rates on a NonStop server.
fault domain
In a fault-tolerant system, a module that can fail without causing a system failure.
fault tolerance
The ability of a computer system to continue processing despite the failure of any single software
or hardware component within the system.
FC switch
See Fibre Channel switch (FC switch).
