local area network (LAN).
local area network (LAN). A set of computers and other electronic devices linked to create
an interoffice or intersite network.
message system. See NonStop Kernel message system.
mirrored disk. A pair of identical disk drives that are used together as a single logical
volume. One drive is considered the primary, and the other is called the backup or
mirror. Each byte of data written to the primary drive is also written to the mirror drive.
If the primary drive fails, the backup drive can continue operations.
multifunction I/O board (MFIOB). A ServerNet adapter that contains ServerNet
addressable controllers (SACs) for SCSI and Ethernet; a service processor; ServerNet
links to the processor, to the two ServerNet adapter slots, and to one of the ServerNet
expansion board (SEB) slots; and connections to the serial maintenance bus (SMB),
which connects components within an enclosure to the service processor.
multiprocessor system. A computer system, including all NonStop systems, that has more
than one processor.
network. A group of interconnected computer systems and devices and the hardware and
software used to connect them.
node. One member of a group of devices that can send or receive transmissions through a
defined network. The network can comprise a set of whole systems, such as an
Expand network, or a set of processors, such as a system area network (SAN). Each
node is separately addressable by a node identifier.
NonStop CORBA. The infrastructure and development environment for enterprise-wide,
distributed-object applications that run on NonStop servers. NonStop CORBA is an HP
implementation of the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) defined
by the Object Management Group (OMG) for objects programmed using Java and
C++.
NonStop EJB. The NonStop implementation of the standard Enterprise JavaBeans
architecture specification.
NonStop Kernel. See HP NonStop Kernel.
NonStop Kernel message system. A set of NonStop Kernel procedures and data
structures that handles the mechanics of exchanging messages between processes at
a node and among nodes of an Expand network.
NonStop ODBC Server. HP software product that provides access to SQL/MX databases
for personal computer clients using the Microsoft ODBC interface and for workstation
clients using Microsoft or Sybase SQL Server.
NonStop Tuxedo. An environment that provides the application programming interface
(API) and transaction monitor functions of the Tuxedo transaction processing system
