Managing and monitoring transactional access to the ZLE data store. HP has
offered a succession of application server environments over the years. Each has
reflected the state-of-the-art technology of the times, and each has provided the
availability, scalability, and performance made possible by the underlying NonStop
infrastructure: SQL/MP or SQL/MX database, NonStop Kernel operating system,
and the NonStop server.
Built on NonStop Core Services
The primary goal of a NonStop server has remained basically unchanged over the
years. That goal is to provide a platform for the development of applications and to
execute those applications efficiently and reliably in an environment that consists of
multiple applications distributed across multiple processors and a large, high-
performance database that must sustain heavy transaction volumes. HP has provided
several models for fulfilling this goal.
Each application server environment has enabled users to develop and run high-
performance, high-volume applications on NonStop servers. Each environment was
carefully designed to satisfy all the sophisticated demands placed on it, from the early
days of online transaction processing to the current days and even heavier demands of
the zero latency enterprise. Each environment, although differing from the others in
many respects, is built on a common base consisting of:
•
A relational database management system that supports high-speed access to
data and updates of the data. This role is fulfilled by the SQL/MX core service.
•
A transaction management facility that preserves the integrity of data during
multiple, concurrent transactions that change the data. This function is handled by
the TMF core service.
•
An operating system that performs low-level tasks such as messaging, file
management, memory management, and so on. The NonStop Kernel operating
system performs these functions.
•
A NonStop server that provides a fault tolerant, high performance, and highly
scalable hardware platform for hosting the software components.
Each of these functional areas plays an important role in the smooth and rapid
development and execution of ZLE applications and services. HP addresses each of
these areas with one or more unique products. Figure 3-1 on page 3-3 shows the
major components of the application server environment.
