Workstation Access to SQL/MX
NonStop MXCS allows client applications developed for the Microsoft Open Database
Connectivity (ODBC) interface to access SQL/MX. Microsoft ODBC is an API for PCs
running in a Windows environment. NonStop MXCS translates the CORE SQL
statements produced by the ODBC API to SQL/MX statements.
The NonStop MXCS enables PC users to take advantage of the many prepackaged
applications that have been written to use ODBC. In addition, developers can create
custom applications that use ODBC calls.
Client applications using the ODBC API can be easily ported from one platform to
another. The application does not require any changes or any knowledge of SQL/MX
in order to access an SQL/MX database. The user simply selects the NonStop ODBC
server, and the translation between the ODBC API and the format required by NonStop
ODBC is automatic. This makes it easy to take advantage of the many off-the-shelf
applications that use ODBC.
The end user of the application does not need any knowledge of SQL syntax; database
queries are constructed simply by clicking the buttons and filling in the blanks on the
graphical user interface.
NonStop MXCS can also be used with client applications written for Microsoft SQL
Server or Sybase SQL Server, which is a workstation-based API. SQL Server provides
the same capabilities for workstations that ODBC does for PCs.
