Routine Management Tasks
As with any other complex subsystem that consists of several interrelated hardware and
software components, Compaq OSI/AS needs to be managed so that it always runs
efficiently and satisfies the needs of its users (in this case, application programs). This
section discusses a set of management tasks that you perform using SCF and EMS.
These tasks are called routine management tasks not because you need to perform them
at regular intervals, but because they are the kinds of tasks that you are likely to
perform, at one time or another, after your OSI/AS subsystem has been configured and
started.
This section describes the most important commands and procedures you use to manage
the operations of an OSI/AS subsystem. This section contains the following main topics:
•
Managing Event Messages on this page
•
Managing Configuration Files on page 5-3
•
Retrieving Configuration Information on page 5-5
•
Managing Subsystem Processes on page 5-11
•
Managing Protocol Services on page 5-16
•
Managing Connection Configurations on page 5-20
Managing Event Messages
There are three relatively simple ways to view event messages:
•
Use the ViewPoint application, which offers several event-display screens and
supports methods for changing these screens. The ViewPoint application is
described in the ViewPoint Manual.
•
Run a printing distributor, which writes event messages to a printer or other display
device, or to a file.
•
Read the event message display produced on the operator console, which is
controlled by the compatibility distributor ($Z0). A possible drawback of this
alternative is that if the compatibility distributor is in compatible mode, the
messages are displayed in console-compatible format. The other two alternatives,
and the compatibility distributor in EMS mode, produce a more readable format:
DSM display format.
The following subsections describe techniques for running printing distributors to
produce some simple event-message displays, and for writing some simple filters used
by the printing distributors to select event messages pertaining to OSI/AS. See the Event
Management Service (EMS) Manual for additional information.
