About This Manual
The OSI/AS Configuration and Management Manual describes how to configure and
manage the Compaq OSI/AS subsystem, which provides OSI Session Layer,
Presentation Layer, and ACSE (in the Application Layer) communication services. This
manual is intended for those who need to configure, monitor, and tune for performance;
troubleshoot; and manage OSI networks.
The OSI/AS subsystem and the OSI/TS subsystem together provide core services that
support the seven-layer OSI Reference Model.
The OSI/AS Configuration and Management Manual (this manual) describes how to
configure and manage the OSI/AS subsystem, including configuration and control of the
Transport Layer up through ACSE in the Application Layer. In addition, this manual
includes information on monitoring and adjusting your subsystem to optimize
performance, and on diagnosing and fixing problems.
Configuration and control of the lower layers is covered in the manuals for the OSI/TS,
X.25 Access Method (X25AM), NonStop TCP/IP, and the Tandem LAN Access Method
(TLAM) subsystem for G06 and later releases or the Port Access Method (PAM)
subsystem for G06 and later releases subsystems.
Manual Audience
This manual is written for operations managers, network managers, and operators who
are responsible for configuring and maintaining a Compaq OSI/AS network.
This manual can also serve as a practical aid to systems programmers who write
programs to manage OSI/AS subsystems.
To use this manual effectively, all readers should have at least a basic understanding of
the following:
•
The OSI Reference Model
•
The OSI standards for the Data Link Layer through ACSE in the Application Layer
•
Basic Compaq system architecture
•
Using Subsystem Control Facility (SCF) commands
•
The Event Management Service (EMS)
To gain the necessary background knowledge of Compaq systems and software as
outlined above, it is also recommended that you be familiar with the material in OSI/AS
Manual Set on page xix and Related Manuals on page xx.
