PTrace and Trace Analysis
The state is described by the session protocol standard as idle, with no transport
connection available. Note also that no functional units have been selected so far, and
the remote called addresses have been supplied (either programmatically or via SCF).
PTrace and Trace Analysis
You can skim through traces quickly by using the SELECT mask with the PTrace
FILTER command. For example, when taking Session Layer traces, use the SELECT L5
mask. The FILTER command in this case offers three main features:
•
FILTER L5SM. Use this command to look at the state machine transition. This is
normally useful only to developers, and is difficult to understand without the state
tables.
•
FILTER L5USER. Use this command to display only the user application I/O
requests and responses as sent and received between the application and TAPS.
•
FILTER L5PROV. Use this command to display the SPDUs, and the I/O requests
and responses to the TSP process.
When troubleshooting Session Layer problems, you can use the PTrace FIND command
to search for the errors returned to the application. For example, the command
FIND “-126”
points directly to the first trace record where the error -126 originated. (Actually, it
searches for the string “-126”, and points to data as well as errors.) Using that as a
starting point, you can look backward through the trace to find out whether the error
originated within the TAPS process (FILTER L5PROV), within the application (FILTER
L5USER), or within the Transport Layer (FILTER L4SERVICES).
