link access protocol - balanced (LAP-B)
link access protocol - balanced (LAP-B). International Telecommunications Union–
Telecommunications (ITU–T) standards that define in the Data Link Layer the
requirements for X.25 connections over wide area networks (WANs).
local address. The terms local address and remote address refer to the two endpoints of a
connection. A local address is the address of the end system
that is considered local with
respect to the user.
Management Information Base (MIB). A database used by the Open Systems
Interconnection (OSI) manager process to store and retrieve configuration information
and information about applications.
Multilan Access Method (MLAM). For D4x-series only, the input/output process (IOP) that
is part of the Tandem LAN Access Method (TLAM)
product.
Network Layer. Layer 3 in the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Reference Model
. This
layer routes data by establishing, maintaining, and terminating communications between
nodes. It sets up the most economical path, both physical and logical, between
communicating nodes; routes messages through intervening nodes to their destinations;
and controls the flow of messages between nodes.
network service access point (NSAP). The logical point at which network service provider
(NSP) process services are provided by the Network Layer entity to the Transport Layer
entity. See also network service access point (NSAP) address.
network service access point (NSAP) address. The global, network-unique address of an
end system’s network service access point (NSAP)
, through which network service
provider (NSP) process services are provided.
network service provider (NSP) process. A process in the Open Systems Interconnection
(OSI) subsystem that performs service and protocol functions for the Network Layer
and, for local area networks (LANs), some functions of the Data Link Layer. NSP
processes are provided by these underlying subsystems: X.25 Access Method (X25AM)
,
Tandem NonStop TCP/IP, and the Tandem LAN Access Method (TLAM) for D4x-
series releases or the Port Access Method (PAM) for G06 and later releases.
nonsensitive command. A Distributed Systems Management (DSM)
command that can be
issued by any user or program allowed access to the target subsystem—that is, a
command on which the subsystem imposes no further security restrictions. For Compaq
data communications subsystems, the nonsensitive commands are all those that cannot
change the state or configuration of objects (usually information commands). Compare

NSAP. See network service access point (NSAP)
.
NSAP address. See network service access point (NSAP) address
.
object-name template. In Distributed Systems Management (DSM)
, a name that stands for
more than one object. Such a name includes one or more wildcard characters, such as *
and ?.
