Glossary
056783 Tandem Computers Incorporated Glossary-7
Distributor. An EMS process that distributes event messages from event logs to
requesting management applications, to Guardian 90 console message destinations, or
to a collector on another node. See also consumer distributor, compatibility
distributor, forwarding distributor, or printing distributor. Contrast collector.
DNS (Distributed Name Service). A part of DSM used to simplify the management of
objects in a NonStop system or an Expand network by managing a distributed, and
partially replicated, database of objects. DNS has both a programmatic and an
interactive interface.
DSC (Dynamic System Configuration). A facility that allows system managers to make
online changes to the configuration of devices and controllers. Its interactive utility
program is called the Configuration Utility Program (COUP). DSC is not used to
configure Tandem OSI subsystem objects, but can be used to configure the underlying
X25AM and TLAM objects.
DSM (Distributed Systems Management). A set of tools used to manage NonStop systems
and Expand networks. These tools include the Viewpoint console application, the
Subsystem Control Facility (SCF) for data communications subsystems, the Subsystem
Programmatic Interface (SPI), the Event Management Service (EMS), the Distributed
Name Service (DNS), and token-oriented programmatic interfaces to the management
processes for various Tandem subsystems.
Empty response record. In DSM programmatic interfaces, a response record containing
only a return token with a value that means “no more response records.” See also
return token.
EMS (Event Management Service). A part of DSM used to provide event collection, event
logging, and event distribution facilities. It provides for different event descriptions
for interactive and programmatic interfaces, lets an operator or application select
specific event-message data, and allows for flexible distribution of event messages
within a system or network. EMS has an SPI-based programmatic interface for both
reporting and retrieving events. See also DSM or event message.
EMS standard definitions. The set of declarations provided by EMS for use in event
management, regardless of the subsystem. Any application that retrieves tokens from
event messages needs the EMS standard definitions. See also definition or definition
files. Compare data communications standard definitions or SPI standard definitions.
End system to intermediate system routing exchange protocol. See ES-IS routing exchange
protocol.
End system. A host or user machine that contains all seven OSI layers. An end system
can communicate with another end system either directly or through one or more
intervening intermediate systems. Tandem systems function as end systems only.
Compare intermediate system.
Entry. A type of object representing a routing table or directory entry in the MIB.
Entry objects are of four types: application (APPL), NSAP, SNPA, and TSEL.
Error. In DSM interfaces, a condition that causes a command or other operation to fail.
Contrast warning.
