Glossary
The following glossary defines terms used in this manual and in the other Compaq OSI
product manuals. Not all terms listed here are used in this particular manual.
action event. An event that requires operator intervention. Each subsystem determines which
events are action events by including a unique Event Management Service (EMS)
token
in the event message. Action events are reported as pairs of event messages: an action-
attention message to report the problem and an action-completion message to report the
problem resolution.
address sharing. The use of multiple addresses on the same physical connection.
Application Layer. Layer 7 of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Reference Model
.
This layer provides the interface between user programs (application processes) and the
OSI network. Layer 7 includes the standards for services such as file transfer, electronic
mail, and terminal access. Compaq OSI/FTAM is an example of an application that uses
the Application Layer.
application name. The address by which an application entity is known to the local
subsystem. Application names are defined locally only.
application program interface (API). A mechanism by which an application program
interfaces with another piece of software.
association. A connection between Application Layer
entities.
called address. The address to which a connect request is addressed.
called user. The application to which a calling user requests a connection.
calling address. The address from which a connect request is initiated.
calling user. The application that initiates a request to establish a connection.
CCITT. See International Telecommunications Union–Telecommunications (ITU–T)
.
collector. An Event Management Service (EMS)
process that accepts event messages from
subsystems and logs them in the event log. See also distributor
.
Compaq NonStop TCP/IP. A communications subsystem that provides access to a network,
allowing you to use the file transfer protocol (FTP) to transfer files to your Compaq
system and run Web-based servers through facilities such as Simple Mail Transfer
Protocol (SMTP). NonStop TCP/IP also provides multicast support, which enables
Himalaya S-series servers to initiate and receive messages intended for multiple Internet
Protocol (IP) addresses associated with Internet subscriptions. See also Transmission
Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
Compaq OSI/AS. A communications subsystem that provides the services of the Open
Systems Interconnection (OSI) Session Layer and Presentation Layer and the called
