Event Management Service (EMS)
Event Management Service (EMS). A part of Distributed Systems Management (DSM)
used to provide event collection, event logging, and event distribution facilities. EMS
has a programmatic interface based on the Subsystem Programmatic Interface (SPI)
for
both reporting and retrieving events.
flow control. A function that regulates the flow of data within a layer or between adjacent
layers.
global network address. See network service access point (NSAP)
and network service
access point (NSAP) address.
header. The initial part of an Event Management Service (EMS)
message.
header token. In an Event Management Service (EMS)
message, a token that provides
information pertaining to the message as a whole.
indirect-process-name. Form of a process name that directs the command through the Open
Systems Interconnection (OSI) manager process first, then on to the specified process
type, allowing the Management Information Base (MIB) to be updated.
initiator. The entity that initiates a connect request. Initiators and responders are defined with
respect to a single connection. Some entities can be both an initiator and a responder
simultaneously, but not over the same connection. Through its application program
interface (API) and FTAM initiator process, Compaq OSI/FTAM provides access to file
transfer, access, and management services, using the standard International Standards
Organization (ISO) protocol across an Open Systems Interconnection (OSI)
network. In
addition, through its FTAM responder process, Compaq FTAM provides file transfer,
access, and management services to FTAM applications on remote systems on an OSI
network.
intermediate system. Any combination of subnetworks and relay systems used to connect
two or more end systems. Compaq systems are not used as intermediate systems. See
also end system
.
International Telecommunications Union–Telecommunications (ITU–T). The standards-
writing organization for international telephone carriers. Formerly called the
International Telegraph and Telephony Consultative Committee (CCITT).
Internet Protocol (IP). A set of rules for communication across subnetworks of a larger
network. Open Systems Interconnection (OSI)
defines an Internet protocol, as does the
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
; the two protocols are similar
but not identical. The OSI Internet protocol defines communications in the Network
Layer.

layer. There are seven layers in the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Reference Model
:
Application Layer
, Data Link Layer, Network Layer, X25AM Physical Layer,
Presentation Layer
, Session Layer, and Transport Layer.
