Troubleshooting Tools and Their Use
Tandem provides four main tools for troubleshooting problems you encounter when
using Tandem FTAM. They are described in the following subsections:
Event Management Service (EMS) Event Log on this page
Inspect on page 6-4
Subsystem Control Facility (SCF) TRACE Command and PTrace Utility on
page 6-7
Other SCF Commands on page 6-10
In the initial stages, when you’re trying to get your Tandem FTAM application to
successfully establish an association, the EMS log, Inspect, and SCF are most useful.
Once the association is established, use Inspect and PTrace while continuing to check
the EMS log; at this stage, SCF is mainly used to initiate traces, as described in
Section 5, Monitoring FTAM Performance
.
When you’re troubleshooting a Tandem responder that services remote applications on
systems from other vendors, you use SCF in the initial stages and PTrace once an FTAM
association is established. In addition, if the problem appears to be in the remote
application, you should use whatever application debugging tools are available on the
remote system.
Event Management Service (EMS) Event Log
The FTAM and APLMGR subsystems report certain errors as EMS event messages,
which you can check for in the EMS log. Event messages can alert you to the following
kinds of problems:
System problems such as processor failures, process failures, and unavailability of
system resources such as LCBs
Interoperability problems that cause protocol-error thresholds to be exceeded
Configuration problems such as mismatches between the common names and OSI
addresses configured in the APLMGR MIB and OSI manager MIB
Failure to establish an association with a Tandem responder caused by an invalid
initiator ID or password
Tandem responder virtual filestore (VFS) file-access failures caused by file-system
errors or security violations
An event message is also returned to inform you that the Tandem responder has
completed a file transfer and indicates whether the transfer was successful.
