initiator
initiator. The entity that initiates a connect request. Initiators and responders are defined with
respect to a single connection. Some entities can be both an initiator and a responder
simultaneously, but not over the same connection. Through its application program
interface (API) and FTAM initiator process, Tandem OSI/FTAM
provides access to file-
transfer, access, and management services, using the standard International Standards
Organization (ISO) protocol across an Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) network. In
addition, through its FTAM responder process, Tandem FTAM provides file-transfer,
access, and management services to FTAM applications on remote systems on an OSI
network.
intermediate system. Any combination of subnetworks and relay systems used to connect
two or more end systems. Tandem systems are not used as intermediate systems. See
also end system
.
International Telecommunications Union–Telecommunications (ITU–T). The standards-
writing organization for international telephone carriers. Formerly called the
International Telegraph and Telephony Consultative Committee (CCITT).
Internet Protocol (IP). A set of rules for communication across subnetworks of a larger
network. Open Systems Interconnection (OSI)
defines an Internet protocol, as does the
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP); the two protocols are similar
but not identical. The OSI Internet protocol defines communications in the Network
Layer.

layer. There are seven layers in the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Reference Model
:
Application Layer, Data Link Layer, Network Layer, Physical Layer, Presentation
Layer, Session Layer, and Transport Layer.
link access protocol - balanced (LAP-B). International Telecommunications Union–
Telecommunications (ITU–T) standards that define in the Data Link Layer the
requirements for X.25 connections over wide area networks (WANs).
local address. The terms local address and remote address refer to the two endpoints of a
connection. A local address is the address of the end system
that is considered local with
respect to the user.
Management Information Base (MIB). A database used by the Open Systems
Interconnection (OSI) manager process to store and retrieve configuration information
and information about applications.
Multilan Access Method (MLAM). The input/output process (IOP) that is part of the
Tandem LAN Access Method (TLAM)
product.
Network Layer. Layer 3 in the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Reference Model
. This
layer routes data by establishing, maintaining, and terminating communications between
nodes. It sets up the most economical path, both physical and logical, between
communicating nodes; routes messages through intervening nodes to their destinations;
and controls the flow of messages between nodes.
