Introduction to Tandem FTAM
For Tandem NonStop systems, Tandem Open Systems Interconnection/File Transfer,
Access, and Management (Tandem OSI/FTAM) implements the FTAM service and
protocol specification ISO 8571, defined by the International Standards Organization
(ISO).
The five-part ISO 8571 standard specifies the basic functions for an implementation of
ISO FTAM. ISO FTAM implementations allow users to manipulate files between two
systems using ISO FTAM across an Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) network.
These functions include interconnecting, accessing, managing, and transferring files
across a network, regardless of the type of computer system.
This section discusses the services, architecture, hardware and software environment,
security considerations, and fault tolerance provided by Tandem FTAM. This section
includes the following subsections:

Tandem FTAM Services
Using Tandem FTAM, you can perform file-handling activities between a Tandem
NonStop computer system and other computer systems. By using a standard protocol
across an OSI network, FTAM allows these different systems to send and receive files
and messages related to file management.
What Tandem FTAM Does
Through its application program interface (API) and FTAM initiator process, Tandem
FTAM provides access to file transfer, access, and management services, using the
standard ISO protocol across an OSI network. In addition, through its FTAM responder
process, FTAM provides file transfer, access, and management services to FTAM
applications running on remote systems on an OSI network. Using the FTAM
management interface, you can configure, monitor, and control the Tandem FTAM
software as it carries out tasks on the network.
Tandem FTAM offers the following file-handling services specified in ISO 8571:
Creating files
Deleting files
Reading files
Modifying files
Reading file attributes
Changing file attributes
