A collector process within EMS (either the primary process or the alternate process, or
both) collects event messages from APLMGR, FTAM initiator, and FTAM responder
processes and writes those events to a log file within EMS. EMS distributor processes
read the event log file, which also contains event messages from other subsystems. Each
distributor process uses filters to select subsets of messages for routing to various
destinations. The distributor process compares messages in the event log file to its filter
and distributes only those that satisfy the conditions of the filter.
EMS printing and consumer distributor processes read the log file and distribute event
messages—displayable as operator messages—to printers, log files, terminals, and
applications that retrieve and display event-message text (such as the ViewPoint
application). Messages are displayed in DSM display format, which includes a message
number and subsystem ID. EMS forwarding distributor processes read the log file and
distribute event messages to other Tandem systems on the Expand network.
The remainder of this subsection discusses event messages and how to use them in the
Tandem FTAM management environment. For more information on alternate collectors,
see Section 4, Managing the FTAM Configuration
