P3 protocol
P3 protocol. The X.400 message transfer system access protocol, which defines a standard
for the submission and delivery of messages and the interaction of user agents (UAs)
and message transfer agents (MTAs). (See the CCITT standards documentation for
X.411.)
P7 protocol. The X.400 message store access protocol, which defines access to the message
store by remote or local user agents. (See the CCITT standards documentation for
X.413.)
PAM. See Port Access Method.
PDU (protocol data unit). An information unit that contains control and address information
and possibly data, and is exchanged between peer entities.
PDU store. The database that stores messages in an X.400 system. A PDU store consists of a
data file and a log file. Each GI, MR, MS, RS, and LO group has its own PDU store.
Pedi (protocol electronic data interchange). The X.400 electronic data interchange
protocol, which is defined as part of the Electronic Data Interchange Messaging System
(EDIMS), that defines the objects used for electronic data interchange. (See the CCITT
standards documentation for X.435.)
Port Access Method (PAM). A Compaq communications subsystem that provides an
independent interface to allow applications access to token-ring or Ethernet local area
networks (LANs) on Himalaya S-series servers. The PAM subsystem provides a port
interface that applications can use by making file-system procedure calls. The PAM
subsystem implements, for LANs, the services of the Data Link Layer and layers below.
PAM replaces the Tandem LAN Access method (TLAM) for G06 and later releases.
private management domain. See PRMD
PRMD (private management domain). An X.400 domain managed by a private
organization, such as a corporation.
probe. An X.400 communication sent by an originator into the message transfer system
(MTS) to test the likelihood of delivery of a message or report. It consists of an envelope
and the description of the actual content of the message or report. The envelope is
similar to, but not the same as, an envelope that would be used for an actual message or
report.
process. A running entity that is managed by the operating system, as opposed to a program,
which is a collection of code and data. A process is a unique execution of a program.
