Mailbox Save and Restore Utilities
This appendix describes the two utility programs that are used to save and restore the
contents of an MS APPL object’s mailbox. The term “mailbox” is used to refer to the
messages contained in an individual MS APPL object’s message store. SAVEMBOX
saves a specified mailbox to a named save file. RESTMBOX retrieves a specified
mailbox from a named save file, and then either recreates the mailbox entries for a
new APPL object, or appends the saved messages to the end of an existing mailbox.
Both of these programs are standalone utility programs; they are not incorporated into
the DSM environment. These programs are not interactive; they are both driven from a
set of command line arguments and run until completion. Both utilities can be run from
the TACL command line.
Mailbox Description
Messages are saved in the form in which they were originally received by the MS
(similar to the form of P3 PDUs) and are restored by being stored once more in an MS.
The MS to which the messages are restored can be the same MS from which they
were saved, a different MS in the same OSI/MHS subsystem, or an MS in a different
OSI/MHS subsystem.
A saved mailbox takes the form of a single audited Enscribe key-sequenced file that
contains a set of PDUs corresponding to a single MS APPL object’s mailbox. In this
section, this Enscribe file is referred to as the mailbox save file. The file structure is
the same as that used for an OSI/MHS PDU data file; like a PDU data file, it is not
directly accessible by users or applications.
Uses of SAVEMBOX and RESTMBOX
Following are some examples of uses of the SAVEMBOX and RESTMBOX utilities:
•
Taking backups of mailboxes. Using SAVEMBOX, you can periodically take a
complete backup of a mailbox.
•
Moving mailboxes. Using SAVEMBOX and RESTMBOX, you can move a mailbox
from one MS APPL object to another MS APPL object in the same OSI/MHS
subsystem or to another OSI/MHS subsystem.
•
Appending mailboxes. Using SAVEMBOX and RESTMBOX, you can append
messages from one mailbox onto the end of another mailbox.
•
Altering supported attributes. You can save all the messages in a mailbox using
SAVEMBOX, delete and recreate an empty mailbox that has different subscribed
attributes,. Then, to restore the messages, use RESTMBOX and specify the new
set of attributes. (Subscribed attributes are those message elements on the
