Glossary-35
user message. An octet string, which can be of a standardized content type, such as IPM or
EDI. A user message can contain one of a variety of encoded information types, such
as text, facsimile, graphics, or voice.
value. See attribute value.
value position. The position of a value of a multivalued attribute.
ViewPoint console application. An extensible interactive application for operators, provided
as part of DSM. ViewPoint allows a system or a network to be controlled from a single
terminal. It includes several block-mode display screens for event messages, a block-
mode display for system or network status, a conversational TACL screen, and a
facility called Define Process to maintain sessions with multiple subsystems at the
same time.
wait manager process. A type of queue manager process.
warning. In DSM interfaces, a condition, encountered in performing a command or other
operation, that can be significant but does not cause the command or operation to fail.
A warning is less serious than an error.
wild-card character. A character that stands for any possible characters in a search string
or in a name applying to multiple objects. In object-name templates, two wild-card
characters can appear: ? for a single character and * for zero, one, or more
consecutive characters. In O/R name attributes, a single asterisk in place of the
attribute indicates “not used.” In the X121-ADDR and NUMERIC-USER-ID attributes
of the ADD APPL, ALTER APPL, ADD ROUTE, and ALTER ROUTE commands, a
single asterisk (*) can substitute for the trailing characters of the attribute value, and
the double asterisk (**) can substitute for the entire value. In SPI, a length of 1 and a
value of a single asterisk indicates full wild-carding of an X121-ADDR or NUMERIC-
USER-ID attribute.
See also object-name template.
working subvolume. A subvolume that contains temporary files used by the OSI/MHS
subsystem processes. There is a separate working subvolume for each process group.
X.25 access method. See X25AM.
X.25 network. Any network or subnetwork linked using X.25 standards. X.25 standards are
CCITT standards that define packet-switching carrier communication in the Network
Layer over wide area networks (WANs).
X25AM (X.25 access method). An HP NonStop product that implements the services of the
Network Layer and underlying layers for WANs.
X.400. The CCITT standards of architecture and protocols for message handling systems.
