EDI Extensions
EDI Extensions
As mentioned in Section 4, Planning Your Program, extensions are a means by which
the CCITT adds new service elements to existing recommendations. Extensions allow
an existing application to detect protocol changes within a message and to know whether
an understanding of those changes is critical for processing the message. Within
Recommendation X.435, the CCITT provides a mechanism for EDI extensions.
An application structured to handle EDI extensions can more easily accommodate new
protocol features. The X.435 extensions mechanism is fully described and contrasted
with a similar X.400 mechanism in Using Extensions and Criticality
on page 4-5.
