Writing and Integrating a Local User Agent With
Compaq OSI/MHS
LUA local user agent (LUA) is an application program that submits and retrieves
messages from a message handling system, on behalf of a user, through a local X.400
message store. OSI/MHS can provide the services of a message store to LUAs. An
LUA can provide X.400 access to a terminal, an application, or a messaging device,
such as telex or facsimile.
What You Need to Do
Figure 1-9 illustrates the relationship between an LUA and OSI/MHS. The LUA uses a
standard protocol called P7 to connect to a message store through a process called the
local operations server (LO). Through the LUA, the user can submit a message to the
message store; later, an MTA reads the message and transmits it across the network.
Likewise, an MTA that receives a message for a message store user places it in the
message store. Later, the LUA can retrieve the message. Thus, use of a message store
is an alternative to direct interaction between a UA and an MTA.
