What You Need to Know
What You Need to Know
To manage a messaging network or hub, you must be familiar with the following topics:
•
The national, international, and organizational policies with which your network
must comply.
•
Management issues and tools available for managing OSI/MHS and its underlying
software. (See “Setting Up a Messaging Network or Hub” earlier in this section.)
•
Special features in support of accounting and billing functions, which are also very
useful for message tracking and troubleshooting. (See “Writing an Accounting or
Billing Application” later in this section.)
•
Management tools and issues for remote messaging systems and applications: for
instance, LAN servers, X.400 gateways, and RUAs.
Depending on the access-control requirements of your network, you might also need to
be familiar with the Master Password Server or with the password server programmatic
interfaces of OSI/MHS.
Table 1-13 lists some major tools Compaq provides for managing a messaging network.
Compaq technical support personnel have access to other important diagnostic tools,
described in the OSI/MHS Troubleshooting Guide.
Table 1-12. Management Differences for ADMDs and PRMDs
ADMD PRMD
Service provider Corporate network or network of trading partners
Likely to require accounting and billing
functions
Might not require interdepartmental billing
Service levels and goals strictly defined
and monitored
Service levels and goals not as critical as for
ADMD
Relays messages across country
boundaries, must comply with
international regulations
Normally relays messages only within one
country, must comply with national regulations
Requires conformance and
interoperability across a diverse
community of users
Likely to connect parties well known to each other,
greater likelihood of community agreements
More likely to have stringent security
requirements
Less likely to have stringent security requirements
