About This Manual
This manual is the place to begin to learn about building messaging systems based on
Compaq products. Whether your task is to build a new messaging system or to integrate
an existing one with an X.400 network, whether your plan is to create a messaging
network for your own organization or to offer a messaging service to your customers or
clients, this manual will help you determine:
Which Compaq products you need to develop and manage your systems and
applications
What kinds of work you will need to do, and what background and skills you need
to accomplish particular tasks
Which Compaq manuals, courses, and other resources can help you in your work
How to find information about other messaging software you can use with Compaq
messaging products
Who Should Read This Manual?
This manual is for network designers, application developers, system managers, and
technical managers. The manual presumes that you are familiar with fundamental
networking and data communications concepts; that readers who are application
designers are professional programmers; and that readers who are managers are familiar
with the tasks of configuration, problem management, performance tuning, and
management policy making (although not necessarily for Compaq systems or X.400).
This manual consists largely of task overviews. The overviews include brief discussions
of crucial messaging terms and concepts but do not provide a messaging tutorial.
What’s in This Manual?
This manual has two sections:
Section 1, “Building Your Message Handling System,” introduces 10 tasks that
might be involved in building a message handling system with OSI/MHS, the family
of messaging products for Compaq NonStop systems. Each task description has
three parts:
What you need to do. This part describes the task and identifies the products or
components that support it.
What you need to know. This part describes the background and skills you need
to perform the task.
Note. The operating system for Compaq NonStop systems, formerly called the Guardian
operating system, is now called the Compaq NonStop Kernel. This change reflects Compaq’s
current and future operating system enhancements that further enable open systems and
application portability.
