Error Messages
Error Messages
SCF displays an error message when it cannot complete the requested action. This
happens when the command is entered incorrectly or is not appropriate for some reason
(for example, the target object cannot be found or is not in the required state, or the user
does not have a proper user ID to perform a sensitive command).
Subsystem Identifier
Error messages for SCF commands sent to Compaq OSI/MHS processes can originate
from the OSI/MHS subsystem or from SCF. Each error message is preceded by the
name of the subsystem that returns the error. Errors returned by the OSI/MHS
subsystem are identified by the string MHS and errors returned by SCF are identified by
the string SCF.
Common Versus Subsystem-Specific Errors
SCF provides a pool of error messages that can be used by all subsystems, called
“common errors. These errors always have negative error numbers. The OSI/MHS
subsystem uses these common errors.
The OSI/MHS subsystem also can generate error messages that pertain solely to that
subsystem, called “subsystem-specific” error messages. These errors always have
positive error numbers.
For each error, therefore, you must look at the subsystem identifier to see which
subsystem returned the error, and look at the error number to determine whether it is a
common error or a subsystem-specific error.
For more information on error messages, see the following:
Type of Error Message Where To Find Additional Information
Common errors
(negative-numbered errors)
The Subsystem Control Facility (SCF) Reference
Manual contains general information on the cause and
recovery of each common error.
OSI/MHS subsystem-specific errors
(positive-numbered errors)
Appendix B, OSI/MHS SCF Error Messages
, in this
manual contains general (non-command-specific)
cause, effect, and recovery information for all
subsystem-specific errors returned by the OSI/MHS
subsystem.
Other subsystem-specific errors
from underlying subsystems
(positive-numbered errors)
The SCF reference manual for each underlying
subsystem contains descriptions of the subsystem-
specific error messages returned by that subsystem.
