Preparing to Establish a Connection
The ISO standards do not include the concept  of  subdevices; subdevices  are part 
of the Compaq implementation of the ISO standards.  However, since OSI/TS 
uses subdevices to uniquely identify transport  connections, it  is helpful to  think 
of a transport connection as identical with the subdevice that provides its access; 
in other words, a subdevice is a  potential transport connection.
Subdevices are longer-lived than transport connections.  After a  connection is 
released, the same subdevice  can be used to  create a  new connection.  
Throughout its history, a  subdevice is likely  to be used to establish and transfer 
data on many different  transport connections.
Preparing to Establish a Connection
Before your application can communicate across the  OSI network, it  must open a  
subdevice and define some parameters.  Use the following procedure calls:
