Preface HP Operations Agent for NonStop (OVNM) is an out-of-the-box solution that provides seamless integration of HP Operations Software (previously known as HP OpenView) with HP NonStop servers. The software is a natural extension of HP Operations and provides you with true end-to-end management of your NonStop environment. Before You Begin Before reading the documentation, you are expected to have a basic understanding of HP Operations environment, as well as the HP NonStop environment.
OVNM Manuals This section provides an overview of the OVNM manuals and their contents. Manual Description Media OVNM Concepts Guide Explains OVNM features, functions, benefits, architecture, and data flow. Describes OVNM agent and server components. PDF OVNM User and Installation Guide Explains how to install, configure and start & stop OVNM components. Also includes OVNM utilities and troubleshooting.
1 About OVNM 1-1 What is OVNM? HP Operations Agent for NonStop software (formerly called OpenView NonStop Server Management, and still known as OVNM) is designed as an out-of-the-box solution to provide seamless integration for managing an HP NonStop server-only environment or to bring NonStop server data into larger multi-platform management systems. As its name implies, OVNM is designed to work with HP Operations software running on either the Microsoft® Windows® or the UNIX® operating system.
1-3 Features OVNM provides rich functions to carry out operational tasks from the HP Operations environment. These are designed to be as proactive as possible, in order to manage vital components of the NonStop server. The solution provides a single point of control for both HP Operations as well as HP NNM. Some of the features are: Powerful Event Management With HP Operations Agent for NonStop installed on your servers, you can selectively filter critical NonStop system and application events.
Automatic or Manual Actions You can configure OVNM to automatically execute NonStop commands (scripts), and or generate an e-mail message when a specific object threshold is violated. Also, for HP Operations Manager, OVNM provides, out-ofthe-box, samples of manual operator-initiated commands that can be executed from the HPOM without an operator’s knowledge of the specific syntax required.
Message Queuing OVNM provides the Message Queuing facility. In case of communication loss between the HP Operations Management Server and the managed NonStop nodes, OVNM will record the time of the communication failure. When communications is re-established OVNM will resend all event that occurred during the outage period.
1-4 Benefits Some of the key benefits of OVNM are: Increased Service Availability OVNM brings information critical to managing Service Level Agreements on the HP NonStop system to the Enterprise Management environment. System availability and performance will be improved, as monitoring will highlight potential breaches in Service Level Agreements. Using OVNM’s proactive monitoring and automated responses, you can promptly respond to unexpected system faults.
2 How OVNM Works 2-1 Consolidating Your Business Environment HP Operations provides a complete management view of your enterprise, which includes: • Enterprise Applications: Like ZLE business applications. • Infrastructure Applications: Like Web servers, Transaction servers and Database servers. • System Infrastructure: Like Resources, Hardware, Network and Security.
2-2 Architecture and Data Flow This section gives a brief overview of the architecture of OVNM. The following figures show the consolidated data flow between the HP NonStop environment and the HP Operations management server provided by OVNM. The consolidated view provided by OVNM architecture helps maximize the availability of the system and increase the productivity of your operations staff.
3 About OVNM Components 3-1 OVNM Management Interfaces The OVNM Agents collect HP NonStop event messages and other information for processing and distribution and pass them to the HP Operations environment. NonStop messages passing through a programmed console application are monitored and collected by OVNM Agents according to predefined rules and filters. The agents package these messages into a defined data structure and map them to the HP Operations environment.
OVNM Console is a software product that provides real-time and customized monitoring of events in different states for your Enterprise. Console provides drill down, real-time and customized viewing of event states. It allows proactive monitoring for mission critical systems and assures the competitive edge necessary for your success. With an all-in-one group of Telnet, user applications and URLs, Policy Manager provides a next generation approach to business critical issues.
ObjectStats is a complement to Object Configuration Client. It helps you to view the current health and status of the HP NonStop system in a single snapshot. ObjectStats provides a statistical count of objects under various subsystems, along with the status of the objects in each subsystem. The status of an object can be Critical, Major, Minor, Warning, Normal or Unknown.
3-2 OVNM and Enterprise Managers HP Operations OVNM SPI Agent feeds NonStop events into the HP Operations Event Browser. The extended events allow the escalation of events into the Service View automatically. It provides predefined policy templates along with extended templates to correlate auto acknowledgment of events.
OV Agent integrates HP Operations NNM with HP NonStop servers by sending the NonStop events to the NNM Alarm Browser using SNMP event support. Figure 3-7 HP Operations NNM Alarm Browser The NSCMD Agent in the HP Operations environment exploits the correlation and automation capabilities of HP Operations and NNM for initiating corrective actions on the HP NonStop servers from the HP Operations consoles.

3-3 Customizing EMS Alert Messages The standard adapter forwards the required information from the EMS event and sends it to the HP Operations platform. However, sometimes the need arises to alter the contents of the message. The most common requirements are to alter the Event Text or the Severity settings of the message. The user can also set the HP Operations Service View that will be impacted by the alert. This enables you to classify the alerts from a customized business perspective.
